Termite infestation is a common challenge in the maintenance and conservation of buildings in Hong Kong, particularly in historic structures where timber elements, concealed voids, damp conditions, and ageing building fabric may create favourable environments for termite activity.

In this CPD talk, Mr. Kwan will introduce the biology, behaviour, and building-related risks of termites. It will explain how termites are highly organised social insects living in colonies, using pheromones and vibrations to coordinate foraging, nest building, defence, and colony expansion. Their ability to feed on cellulose, with the help of symbiotic microbes in their digestive systems, enables them to break down timber and other organic materials commonly found in buildings.

The session will also examine how termite nests and tunnel systems help regulate temperature and humidity, allowing colonies to survive in Hong Kong’s warm and humid climate. While termites play an important ecological role in decomposing organic matter and recycling nutrients, their presence in buildings can threaten timber fabric, structural integrity, and heritage value.

This talk will provide practical insights into termite risks, early detection, prevention, and appropriate control strategies for building conservation and management.

Mr. Spencer Kwan

Mr. Spencer Kwan, the founder of United Elite Group, possesses more than 40-year pest control experience. He is a Guest Lecturer since 2000 for Termite and Pest Control at The University of Hong Kong, and a Member of Termite Control Consultancy Research Team at City University of Hong Kong. He is also actively involved in the global healthcare industry with his participation in the Consultation for World Health Organization (WHO) Methods and Procedures for Aircraft Disinsection.
