About the CPD

Initiated by the Henderson Land Development Co. Ltd, Kong Ha Wai is an Eclecticism residential compound currently undergoing its meticulous revitalisation process. Its mansion, entrance gate and servants’ quarters are 90 years old Grade III historic structures, first completed in 1935 and has long been a regional landmark in the Kam Tin and Pat Heung Area. The conservation process will enhance its magnificent architectural fabric, as well as promulgate the region’s multi-faceted cultural significance as one of Hong Kong earliest settlements.

Constructed in the 1930s by Mr. Wong Fong Kiu, an Indonesia-returned Chinese merchant, KHW demonstrates interchange of cultural values through its mix of Hakka, Chiuchow and Nanyang architectural design. With its well-preserved construction materials and tools, it showcases the application and development of early prefabrication techniques in Hong Kong. Proactively responding to the societal changes throughout its ninety years lifespan, the Compound had accommodated more than ten different functions, relating the Compound to the major development phases of Hong Kong and leaving a transformative nature for future interpretation.
