About the Site Visit

The garment industry in Sham Shui Po was thriving in the 1980s and 1990s. At that time, there were garment factories, fabric shops, wholesalers, and clothing accessory stores in the area, supporting Hong Kong’s garment industry and creating a unique landscape in Sham Shui Po. With the transformation of Hong Kong’s economy, the garment industry in Sham Shui Po gradually declined. In addition, with impacts of the pandemic, gentrification, and the rise of cultural tourism industry, the community landscape of Sham Shui Po has undergone further changes.

During this visit to Sham Shui Po, the first part will involve exploring the busy Ki Lung Street and Tai Nan Street to search for the former garment industry community, and observing the interaction between the flourishing cultural industry in recent years and the landscape of Sham Shui Po. We will also share tips and experiences on planning community tours with community stakeholders. In the second part, we will visit small shops in the area and discuss the development and evolution of the garment industry in the community with the shop owners, as well as how cultural tourism and associated industries have brought changes and impacts to them and the surrounding landscape.
