About the Lecture
This talk will introduce the concept of cultural landscapes with reference to the UNESCO World Heritage definitions as well as overseas and local case studies. Cultural landscapes allow us to interpret the dynamic interrelationship between natural and built heritage resources and pursue a more holistic and sustainable approach to conservation. Unfortunately, there appears to be a misguided assumption in Hong Kong that nature conservation and built heritage conservation should be mutually exclusive. This is a missed opportunity and has led to the loss and degradation of valuable heritage cultural landscapes. This presentation will address this issue and discuss valuable lessons from cases demonstrating failure and success in conservation of cultural landscapes in Hong Kong.
